The house

Whether you are looking for a romantic retreat, honeymoon haven or family friendly adventure, The Island can cater for occasions magnificent or modest. The vibe is not so much plush luxury, nor austere minimalist, but rather stylish, quality, welcoming, and comfortable, with an unforgettable entry and exit, and fun touches in the house. All this adds up to a unique venue in which to build your own fun memories together. The true luxury feature is that you have complete privacy. There isn’t even a doorbell, which means no unwanted visitors. Is there anything more enthralling than a celebratory stay on your own private island? We think not!

We are blessed by every type of weather in Newquay, often all in the same day! Despite this variability, there is more sun than you might expect and when the sun does come out we tend to follow it round the house.

The newly renovated open-plan kitchen-diner has been designed to make the most of the morning sun when it streams in.

Early in the day we like to choose a flag to fly from the selection in the flag corridor. On particularly windy days we choose the smaller “storm” flag but usually we go for a Cornish or national flag.

During the day we are then normally out and about exploring the coast, but if we are relaxing at home in good weather we sit in deckchairs on the lawn, or stretch out in the free-standing hammock on the patio. There is very often a coastal sea breeze, which varies from light to strong, but the main sunbathing areas on The Island are sheltered and on sunny summer days become natural suntraps, hidden from view.

Lunch could be on the sun deck, with a 180+ degree view of the horizon and coastline.

If it is an inside day then a good place to spend some time is in the two-part living room. This is open and airy, with chic touches of modern elegance and sea views all round.

Make some time to relax on the faux-fur clad rocking chairs in the bay window, a prime position for the ever-changing sea view. There is always something going on, so keep the provided binoculars handy.

Later, it may be time to move through to the conservatory, warmed by the day’s sun and often still receiving the afternoon sun streaming in. With a view of the fishing boats starting to return to the harbour with today’s fresh catch, this is the ideal time and place for a Cornish cream tea.

Maybe later, move through to the snug lounge area where the floor to ceiling curtains and woodburning stove create a cosy evening atmosphere.

Set the mood with a record from The Island’s eclectic selection of vinyl, or plug in or stream your own music though the valve amplifier.

Magic Hat Bar

At some point in the evening you may well find yourself in the ‘The Magic Hat Bar’.

This is a separate room, designed to rouse the host in you, complete with its own bar billiards table, bar pre-stocked with some essential spirits, mixers and beers to kick off your stay, and a 40” TV. This room is ideal to get your soirée in full swing before moving through to the dining room.

You may also end up here for a nightcap and a game of bar billiards, competing against each other under the pressure of the ticking internal mechanical timer.

Dotted through the house, art by local and family artists adds a personal touch. Outside, Neptune gazes out to sea.

Main bedroom - the Lighthouse Room

The main bedroom, with a superking sized bed, is entirely new and now gives a view out to the horizon.

Creating this view was a major reason for doing the 2024 renovation in the first place. This started with the simple idea of a small loft conversion to create a bedroom facing out to sea, and ended up as a multi-year-long project, pretty well rebuilding the interior of the house.

The project had its challenges, not least as everything had to come in and out over the bridge, but we are delighted with the result.

From the main bedroom through the double sliding glass doors is a small balcony, ideal for a morning coffee with spectacular views of the bay, which sweeps dramatically as far as Trevose Lighthouse in the distance, 10 miles away as the crow flies.

The main bedroom en suite bathroom is also entirely new. The shower is filled with light coming in from high windows on all four sides,  and gives a view to the horizon through a large porthole window.

There is also a free standing bath in the bedroom, which enables a luxurious warm soaking while listening to the waves breaking on the rock way below.

The second bedroom - Quay West

The second bedroom was also newly created in the 2024 renovation. It is constructed out of the West gable, with a large new triangular window facing out over acres of beach and waves to the harbour – the original “New Quay” dating back to 1439.

This bedroom can be set up as superking sized or twin.

Next door is a separate shower room, with twin showers. This room will normally be for the exclusive use of Quay West.

The Secret Garden bedroom

Previous guests will recognise the downstairs bedroom, with its distinctive bay window. This is hidden away, and looks out onto a corner of the garden.

This room has its own small en suite WC and shower room, and can be set up as superking sized or twin.

BATHROOMS

The downstairs family bathroom and all en suite shower rooms are equipped for convenience and comfort.

White fluffy bathrobes, bath towels and complimentary bath products are available for your use.

On stormy days, check out the games cupboard, well-stocked to keep little and big guests amused, while the fire crackles and the boom of the waves crashing on the rocks below reminds you that you are on your own solid rock in the ocean.
