The garden
Explore the charming garden area which wraps around the entire property. With the help of our talented gardener Jan, we have designed The Island’s garden with your comfort and experience in mind. Although the garden area is not large, because it stretches all around the house and has an extra lower level terrace there is always somewhere for you to sit in comfort and find just the right angle of sun, watch the surfers, identify the birds busy at the bird feeder, or just hide away with a book in a deckchair, hanging seat or free-standing hammock.
HOISTING THE FLAG!
On The Island, you can choose from a selection of flags to hoist and fly high over the beach below.
Tradition has it that flags are lowered at sundown – but that just gives you the excuse to choose a different flag for the next morning’s flag-raising ceremony.
It is not unknown for guests to design a flag as a uniquely personal gift for a really special occasion. Please let us know if you are thinking of doing this and would like advice on finding a suitable flag maker. Or feel free just to bring your own country/team/other flag to match the occasion: fyi ours are 6 foot x 3 foot with Inglefield clips.
BRAAISLAND BBQ TABLE
Our outdoor innovative BBQ table by Braaisland has a weatherproof stone surface and incorporates a fire pit for grilling in the centre of the table, so that cooking on the BBQ is no longer a solitary occupation!
The Braaisland BBQ table is one of the first ever made, and it was quite an operation getting it over the bridge on a windy day.
For days where a dry evening is not guaranteed, a more traditional gas BBQ is also available outdoors but undercover on the patio, conveniently accessed through the dining room’s double doors. There you will also find an additional rustic table which will comfortably seat the whole family and allow you to watch the sun set as you eat your dinner to the sound of the waves below.
OUTDOOR SHOWER
The warm outdoor shower by the kitchen door is perfect to peel off a wetsuit in warm comfort, or wash off sandy feet or muddy paws.
We weren’t sure whether to go to the trouble and expense to install this shower as regulations required us also to lay a whole new drain. But wise friends with a coastal property told us it would become our favourite luxury item after a swim or surf. They were right!
