Facilities

COOKING OPTIONS

The kitchen is farmhouse style rather than Grand Designs granite (that’s our BBQ table outside!), but we have equipped the kitchen with all that is necessary to create a romantic tête-à-tête or family dinner. The hob and other appliances are all electric. In fact all power on The Island is electric; there is no gas supply as all utilities have to come over the bridge.

Impress your loved ones with your culinary delights, or talk to us in advance to arrange a talented local chef to come in to take the strain and cook for you.

In fine weather use one of the two BBQs, including the amazing BBQ table: see “Braaisland” on “The Garden” page.

When you arrive at The Island you will find basic provisions such as bread and milk to get you started, and there are supermarkets in the town within easy walking distance.

If you fancy exploring, there is a picnic hamper which you can pack with tempting treats and then venture below to the beach.

If you split forces, and need to call others in from the beach to lunch or dinner, hoist a pre-arranged flag to tell the beachgoers that it’s time to eat!

TOP HAT BAR

‘The Top Hat Bar’ is a separate room which will be sure to rouse the host in you, complete with its own bar billiards table, bar pre-stocked with some essential spirits, mixers and beers to kick off your stay, and a 40” 3D TV. This room is ideal to get your soirée in full swing before moving through to the dining room.

You may also end up here for a nightcap and a game of bar billiards, competing against each other under the pressure of the ticking internal mechanical timer.

DOGS

One well-behaved dog is welcome, and we will consider two – please call to discuss this option.

The garden and house are dog-friendly but please keep four-legged friends off the furniture.

We charge a £35 additional fee per dog.

Unlike many beaches which allow dogs only seasonally, Towan Beach and the other linked beaches below The Island are all dog friendly, all year round.

Dogs quickly learn their own way and want to rush down the steps to explore the beach, as soon as you let them out through the secure front door.

At low tide there are acres of sand for dogs to run around, new scents on the ocean breeze, and interesting things to discover like small rock pools and large caves. All this is bounded by dramatic granite cliffs, far from any traffic.

SMALL CHILDREN

The Island is family friendly, with a travel cot and highchair available for your little ones. If you inform us when booking, we can set up the cot in the master bedroom’s ‘snug’ for your use. We do ask that you bring your own linen for the cot. Please note that we do not supply a stair gate at the property.

special occasions

We’d love to help you fill your stay at The Island with magical memories. Our retreat has proved perfect for surprise proposals, special birthday celebrations and romantic honeymoons. We do ask that you inform our housekeeper Nick prior to your stay, so he can help to accommodate your plans where possible.

WiFi

If you need to stay connected, or just relax in front of a film in the evening, The Island has fast Fibre To The Home which gives wifi speeds of up to 120 MB/s so you can use your computer and stream to your Netflix or other account on one of the TVs.

parking

The Island features a garage suitable for parking two cars just a stone’s throw away. This is a rarity for Newquay and very useful in the busy summer months! The garage is high enough to take most types of car including people carriers: garage height clearance is a shade over 2 metres; garage width is 5.10 metres; garage length is 5.15 metres.

Accessibility: the short public path from the garage to The Island’s front door includes 22 stone steps down, with handrails each side, and a single wide 90 degree turn. We did once host a group of guests who included a guest in a wheelchair, who had a great time, on The Island, but the logistics did involve getting down, and then back up those steps, which proved it can be done if you are really determined but the public part of the access sadly cannot be described as in any way ‘wheelchair-friendly’ for reasons outside our control.

'The Island is a fabulous place to stay and Nick - who helps run the place - is just great. Always on time, super helpful. We had a great holiday.'
